Whilst Woolacombe Beach itself is a stunning location, there are several hidden gems nearby that are less crowded and offer a more tranquil experience. In this blog post, we will explore two of these secluded beaches that you can visit during your stay at Westbeach One in Woolacombe. We frequent both beaches ourselves and thoroughly enjoy them, especially in the busier months.

Barricane Beach

Located just a mile away from Woolacombe Beach, Barricane Beach is a small cove nestled between dramatic cliffs. This beach is a perfect spot for those seeking a quieter, more intimate experience. You can walk to Barricane Beach from Woolacombe very easily. At low tide, the two are connected but be careful - when the tide comes in you'll need to go along the paved road!

Barricane Beach is known for its unique mix of sand and shells, which have been washed up from the Caribbean over thousands of years. The beach is also a great spot for rock pooling at low tide, making it a fun destination for families with young children.

Whilst there are no lifeguards or facilities at Barricane Beach, a seasonal beach café serves delicious Sri Lankan curries and a variety of snacks, adding to the charm of this hidden gem. Don't forget to pack your own beach essentials, such as towels, sun protection, and a picnic if you plan to spend the day there.

Lee Bay

For those seeking a beach off the beaten path, Lee Bay is a must-visit. Situated around 4.5 miles from Woolacombe, this secluded cove is surrounded by dense woodland and imposing cliffs, creating a magical atmosphere. Lee Bay can be reached by car or by taking a scenic walk along the South West Coast Path (warning - it's a long walk!)

The beach at Lee Bay is a mix of sand, pebbles, and rock pools, making it an excellent destination for beachcombers and nature enthusiasts. During low tide, you can explore the small caves hidden within the cliffs, whilst at high tide, the beach becomes a peaceful spot for a swim or a paddle in the clear waters.

There are no lifeguard services at Lee Bay, and facilities are limited to a small car park and public toilets, so pack a picnic and any other essentials for your day.

Wrapping Up

Whilst Woolacombe Beach is undoubtedly beautiful, the lesser-known beaches of Barricane and Lee Bay offer a more secluded and peaceful experience. These hidden gems are perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the natural beauty of the North Devon coastline. So, pack your beach essentials, and set off on an adventure to discover these stunning locations during your stay at Westbeach One in Woolacombe.
